OUR EXPERTISE

Specialist fire safety support, whatever stage your building is at.

Whether you're responsible for an existing building, planning a development or dealing with a more complex fire safety issue, we'll help you understand what is required and what needs to happen next.

Existing buildings

Development projects

Specialist risk

The right advice depends on the building, the people and the way it is used.

A fire risk assessment for an occupied building is very different from a fire strategy for a new development, and DSEAR requires specialist consideration of dangerous substances and explosive atmospheres.

ESI brings these disciplines together so you can get the right level of support without being pushed towards work you do not need.

Common questions

A few things people often ask us

Answers to common questions about fire risk assessments, fire strategies, DSEAR and specialist fire safety support.

Do I legally need a fire risk assessment?

In many cases, yes. If you are responsible for a non-domestic premises or the common parts of a residential building, you will often have legal duties under fire safety legislation. A fire risk assessment is usually one of the main ways those duties are evidenced and managed.

The exact requirement depends on the type of premises and how it is used, which is why a brief conversation can often help clarify the position quickly.

A fire risk assessment is generally focused on an existing building in use and on identifying fire hazards, the people who may be at risk and any improvements that should be considered.

A fire strategy is more concerned with how fire safety is designed into a building or project, for example during a new development, refurbishment, change of use or more complex alteration.

If you're unsure which one applies to your situation, speak to us and we'll help you work it out.

DSEAR is concerned specifically with risks from dangerous substances and potentially explosive atmospheres.

It may be relevant if your workplace stores or uses flammable liquids, gases, vapours or combustible dusts, or carries out processes where those materials could create a fire or explosion risk. If you're unsure whether DSEAR applies, tell us what substances and processes are involved and we can advise.

Yes. Historic buildings often need a more considered approach because fire safety requirements have to be balanced against the building's character, fabric and practical limitations.

ESI works with property professionals and building owners to find proportionate solutions rather than applying a standard approach without considering the building itself.

ESI works across the South and South East of the UK.

For many services we can also advise remotely at the early scoping stage, so if you're unsure whether we cover your location, send us the postcode and we'll confirm.

Send us a few basic details about the building or project and what you need help with. We'll review the information, come back to you if anything needs clarifying and then explain the proposed scope of work and next steps.
